From the Kohala Coast resorts, drive north on highway 19, with the ocean on your left. Continue until you reach the stop sign at the T intersection. Turn left, following the sign to Kawaihae (Route 270). At the bottom of the hill, turn left into the main entrance to KAWAIHAE HARBOR/ Port of Kawaihae, which is a working commercial port. If you pass the Harbor Grill on your right, or reach the end of the road and canoe club, please turn around.
At the entrance to the harbor, the driver may be asked to show identification. From there, turn left and proceed to the end of the road. Turn right at the stop sign, and then right again onto a small dirt road. You will have just driven in a ‘U’ around a container yard. At this point you will see Maile on the dock.
On Fridays, an earlier green gate is made available to the public, and you will access through this entrance, rather then the main gate, on this one day of the week.
